ROBERT A SIBLEY, JR., WANDA WILLIAMS SIBLEY, SUSAN LYNN, DAVID A LTON
8822 Lanier # 203
Silver Spring, MD
February, 1960 / August, 1961
David Alton Sibley was born while the family lived here. Rent was $ 135.00 per month.
This apartment had two large bedrooms, 1 bath, and pink kitchen and was on the third floor. Taking Susan out to play from this apartment was quite a production.
Normally it was about 20 minutes drive from Lanier Drive to Bethesda, Maryland where Bob worked. But when there was snow it took him 3 hours. People would abandon their cars right in the middle of the road and there were never enough plows to clear the roads.
Easter, 1961 was on April 2nd. College students were home for Easter break. Jacquie Gassaway, one of our Training Union students at First Baptist Church, Silver Spring, Md was home from school in North Carolina. Jacquie had fallen in love with Susan, so she spent as much time at our apartment was possible. On Monday, April 3 Jacquie came and wanted to take us with her to visit the Grand Mother of her former boyfriend. (This Grand Mother lived next door to the Hubert Humphrey family. Mr. Humphrey eventually became Vice President of the United States.)
I have never had a car ride that was scarier than that one. Jacquie was one wild driver. That night we went to the Washington Sanatorium, Takhoma Park, Maryland (a Seventh Day Adventist Hospital). David was born the next morning. April 4. I always felt that his arrival was a week early because of that ride.
